My most recent nursing book is on the history of nursing. The idea for that book stemmed from the fact that I enjoy learning about history and although nursing history is addressed in nursing curriculum it often is only discussed briefly because there is so much content to cover.
My two forthcoming children's books were certainly influenced by my nursing experience. One of the courses I teach is transcultural nursing and that led me to write the Same Inside Different Outside which has several themes (diversity, the human body, and fear). The One Eyed Pug is a fictional story based on a true story that happened to my little pug which also has several underlying themes (disability, moving, adoption, perseverance).

I just completed the second edition of my first nursing textbook, The New Nurse Educator: Mastering Academe. And I am always working on my children's stories.

The old adage "if you want to be a writer you need to write" is the first piece of advice. My spark for writing began in grade school however, I didn't become a writer until much later. At that point I began to read everything I could about writing, especially children's writing. I also took several online classes and I started to write as often as possible. It took years before I was ready to submit a short story. And when I received my first rejection I was crushed and although I continued to write sporadically it was a very long time before I submitted another story. Ironically, one summer vacation I went to a psychic, albeit with much skepticism. When I asked her about becoming a published writer. She replied you will when you have to write what you know. I took it with a grain of salt and went on with my life. Quite frankly I never thought of publishing nursing articles or books until I transitioned into my current role in academia. As a doctoral student I was writing paper after paper and finally my dissertation. During that time my mentor and colleague asked me to review her manuscript and something sparked in me. I had an idea for a nursing book and so that was my foray into the world of writing for my profession. One day I thought back to the visit I had with the psychic and had an aha moment. My son said she just put the thought into my subconscious; perhaps. The point of this story is that you may thing you only one to write in a particular genre but keep an open mind. But don't give up on your dreams. Throughout it all I never stopped writing my children's stories. Be prepared for many rejections and follow the three P's; Persistence, Perseverance, and Professionalism. When you have a polished piece of writing to submit be prepared for rejection and also be open to revisions.

It's hard to identify the best thing as I truly enjoy writing, although editing is a challenge for me. If I had to pick one thing I would say being able to share my knowledge and experiences and bring the joy of reading to others.

I write every single day and, I always have a notebook with me. I do not get writer's block that often, however, when I do I usually do another activity. I like to paint and take long walks and find these two things quite helpful.
