My most recent published book, The Man From Darke County, came from thinking about mental illness, and people who function in society with this huge extra pressure on them. I thought "what if you were a cop who was delusional, had been suspended, and your life was in tatters, but the world around you proved stranger than your delusions?"
I went from there, taking elements from horror, the supernatural, urban legends, and modern crime drama to weave the world together.

Write, write, write. Read, read, read. Understand storytelling; setting a scene, using words to create a mood, building to a climax, how to guide your readers where you want them without beating them over the head.
Also, if you have an excuse(I am nervous about people reading my work, I have trouble finishing a story, I don't have the time), you will use it. We ALL go through those things, clear your mind and practice your craft. No one is perfect from birth. We have all had to work to get where we are. What separates authors from those who want to be authors is dedication and hard work.

Best thing? Ultimately it is telling a great story that keeps people interested and gets them excited.

I work through it, usually. Sometimes that means gritting my teeth and writing the next scene, even though I know it will be awful. Sometimes it means brainstorming what will come next.
