Hi Heather,
Thanks for getting in touch. I apologize for this, but Goodreads made a mistake on this giveaway! Their system was supposed to randomly select one winner. It seems that they transposed the page count of the book (406 pages) for the number of winners. I was shocked to wake up one morning with the message that they had drawn 406 winners instead of one! That was not how the contest was supposed to go…
Due to the error, Goodreads should have sent you an email with some instructions for how you can download a free digital copy of the book. The last thing I want to do is disappoint readers, so I’m happy to offer you an ebook edition of The Painter’s Apprentice, which you can download to your preferred device.
If you didn't get the email, please send me a message directly at laura@lauramorelli.com and I'll respond with instructions.
I’m sorry for the poor experience. I understand that Goodreads is revising their giveaway system and I hope that they will be able to avoid errors in the future.
Best regards,
Laura

Thank you, Allie! :)

Thanks for your question, Allie! Wow, it's tough to pick just one. I guess it would be the day I hired a group of Italian woodworkers to build a bookcase in my house near Milan. It was that day that my curiosity about Italian craftsmanship was sparked and I was inspired to follow it. Little did I know it would be the beginning of a decades-long journey! Happy New Year! --Laura

Hi Adela,
Thanks for your question! I hope you're enjoying THE GONDOLA MAKER and I look forward to your feedback.
Right now I'm working on the launch of a new series of travel guides called LAURA MORELLI'S AUTHENTIC ARTS. You can learn more about the series here: http://lauramorelli.com/laura-morelli....
Next, I plan to return to "art historical fiction." I am working on a series of stories that trace the "life" of a single object over several hundred years. I'd be happy to share news of this new project if you'd like to sign up for my newsletter: www.lauramorelli.com.
Thanks again, Adela, and happy reading! :)

I continue to write about art history for a broad audience. I have developed art history lessons for TED-Ed, reaching a large global audience of students. I am currently working on a series of guides that lead travelers to authentic arts in particular cities. I will come back to historical fiction, though, as so many stories behind the world’s works of art—whether famous or undiscovered, real or imagined—remain to be told.

Art history is the most fascinating topic in the world! As an art historian, I have had the pleasure to teach, research, and write about subjects for which I have a passion. What a job! I have always relished the hours in the library and love sharing new material with my students.
Early in my career I learned the craft of academic writing, a type of writing that demands rigor and a strict adherence to the conventions of humanities scholarship. After a while, though, the more I wrote, the more boxed in I felt. The conventions of writing for conference lectures and scholarly journals transformed the exciting topic of art history into something dry and inaccessible. I felt compelled to burst out of the box! Writing for a broader audience has given me the opportunity to share the thrill I felt when I first encountered art history.

The story of THE GONDOLA MAKER germinated inside my head while I was busy researching another book called MADE IN ITALY. The contemporary Italian artisans I interviewed, one after another, told me how important it was to them to pass on the torch of tradition to the next generation. I began to wonder what would happen if the successor were not able or willing to take on that duty. The characters of the gondola maker and his heirs began to take shape.
