Staring at blank page with a blank mind can be an intimidating experience. I find that the best way to get through this void is to remain confident that you will. The thread to your story will appear, seemingly out of nowhere. The sub-conscious works like that. If you are stuck on a new chapter to your story, think about a new challenge that breaks into the life of your character. It also helps to scream and run around the room in a crazy fashion…like you are being chased by bees. Stop when you are thoroughly exhausted, then start writing.

I would look at a photograph and see a story. I would go to a place (the mall, an alley, a coffee shop, etc) and let the surroundings speak to me. I would set the mood with music and then tune it out when writing. I would become aware of something that makes me happy or sad or agitated or frustrated (yes, a visceral reaction).

I was following the arc of the story through the first three volumes. The natural next step was to add something linked in on one level but entirely different on another. I pulled ideas from cutting edge technology innovations and contemporary international politics.
