Katherine M. Lawrence As I go to sleep, instead of counting sheep, I think about what my main character will stumble upon and how on earth will she ever get out of the mess.

The next time I have a block of time to write, I set down these situations and suddenly the novel takes shape before me. Seeing that outcome inspires me.
Katherine M. Lawrence The first advice I got from an adult who was an editor of a newspaper for a living. He said, "read a lot of other authors, not to copy them; just see how they do it."
Katherine M. Lawrence The best thing is going into another world.
Katherine M. Lawrence Peter Elbow had a technique which I found helpful. Start writing, even if it is to say "I am sitting here. I can't think of what to write ..." but keep the pen (or keyboard) moving. Finally something starts to happen.
Katherine M. Lawrence The hero's journey is not just for males. Women too might go on such a journey, only there are too few books or films that portray women as the hero. History records women who were warriors--some even were samurai.

While female heroes in comic books and sci-fi make great reading, I was drawn to think about what it must have been like for a woman to set out on the hero's journey 840 years ago where she is not the fetching semi-capable sidekick of a man--the actual main character of the story, who ends up getting her out of the toughest scrapes. Full disclosure, she does get help from time-to-time, but no more than would a male protagonist.

"Cold Blood" was inspired, in part, by the "Kung Fu" episode "Aletheia," Shakespeare's "The 12th Night," and a self-defense situation I was pulled into myself with a tough man who was desperate to show me "real combat" and not the foolish things I learned in my martial arts training. I managed to survive that intact.
Katherine M. Lawrence "Sword of the Taka Samurai" is a six part set of adventures of Yamabuki, a female warrior. The story is inspired by a woman samurai who lived in 12th century Japan.

The first book of the series, "Cold Blood,"has been released as a Kindle edition, paperback, and soon in hardback.

Royal by birth, Yamabuki does not want to be a bird in a gilded cage, so she trains as a samurai.

Though the life of a warrior brings its own challenges, welcomes the chance to be on her own. Not even seventeen springs of age, she sets out to the capital carrying three mysterious dispatches for the Kata clan. Little does she know that on her first journey she is trailed by ninja who intend to kill her and seize the documents.

The second book which is due in early spring 2015 is "Cold Heart." She stops in a small town. Think "Dodge City" or "Deadwood," only the samurai version. More ninja come in pursuit. The town is filled with a strange cast of characters and soon she experiences romance, pain, loss, and does a lot of growing up in the process.

The third book, "Cold Trail" will be released in late spring 2015, when she finds herself tested even further.
