Wright Gres I don't. I am blessed with no deadlines. This is actually a mixed blessing. Nevertheless, I don't. When I'm stumped as to where a story is to go, I wait it out. I have plenty to do in my real life. Eventually, things work out and I continue.
A more realistic -- or rather, more helpful -- response would be that when I have to, I write. Write about something else, or from a different direction. That will often kick start things.
Wright Gres My answer to what can be best described as a mid-life crisis was to sign on as a deckhand on a schooner about to embark on a transatlantic. Six months later, after an adventure of a lifetime exploring the Mediterranean, I came home feeling the need to read more and learn more about the places I'd been, the history, and to some extent even the politics. I found it was a big world out there.
A few years later, after my experiences and what I'd learned had had the time to simmer a bit, I found I had a story to tell. For me creating a fictional adventure that the Walter Mitty in me could enjoy was far more rewarding than non-fiction.
