David Crowe I got the idea from where I get most of my ideas, a silly thought popped into my head and I thought, "That would be great in a book!" Then I build around the idea and flesh it out. I think part of it is that Jackson kind of represents my sense of humor personified and he gets to tell all the funny jokes for me.
David Crowe Mostly, my wife. She always pushed me to write, so I finally gave in and did National Novel Writing Month. (https://nanowrimo.org) It made me focus on what I needed to do to make my dream of being an author come true. But my wife is the one who made me sit down and do it. She's always been my support and cheering section. That's why I love her.
David Crowe Book two in the Jackson series. This book is focused more on other characters than the first book. I want to build the world around Jackson and make his world something everyone can enjoy.
David Crowe Keep at it. Don't give up. I waited a good 10 years before I finally sat myself down and finished my first published book. It was a matter of "I have to do this" and I sat down and wrote until I was satisfied with what I had done, and there's not a day goes by I didn't wish I had started sooner.
Also, find something to motivate you. One of my big motivators is National Novel Writing Month in November. It's great to write daily and see your work come to life. https://nanowrimo.org I highly recommend it.
David Crowe Losing myself in the world I create. Being the character for a while or just watching them from afar is always an amazing experience. I don't see a lot of myself in my characters usually, nor do I envision friends or family most times as the characters. I just make them up in my head and watch them play on the pages.
David Crowe Besides booze?
Just kidding, of course. Mainly I try to free write. I just think about a plot idea or something I think was funny or interesting and I start writing about it.
In fact, a lot of the funnier stuff ends up in my books or in my to do pile for future books.
