My most recent book idea came from observing the challenges I was having doing online marketing for The Life Reset. Seeing difficulty in getting people interested in the book make me realize that the topic might be too narrow. I decided to approach the overall subject of career transition from a broader, more emotional perspective.

Usually, I write when I have something I want to say. I don't speak well, meaning I'm not quick on my feet and don't do well in verbal arguments. So, I tend to write what I want to say. The desire to express my opinion or ideas on a topic is my inspiration.

I am working on a small book that addresses the subject of midlife empowerment. I think that there are many people in midlife who are feeling disempowered by the economy. I want to offer encouragement and practical advice to this audience.

This is a question that is probably impossible to answer in a way that will speak to everyone who aspires to be a writer. If you're interested in making a living as a writer, as I do, I would suggest finding a commercial specialization. In my case, it's content writing for the tech industry. I can't advise people who want to make a living as an author beyond saying "Stick with it." Books get finished if you work on them. I know that sounds obvious but it's an easy concept to forget. Work on it every day and it will get done.

Luckily, I have not had this problem too often, though I sometimes have difficulty concentrating on a particular topic. I have found two approaches that work. One is to switch to a different writing project for a while, perhaps something less challenging. The other is to just switch off the computer and do something else for a while, particularly something that involves working with my hands. This seems to rewire the brain temporarily and get the creative process going again.
