Callen Harty I have been living with my child sex abuse my entire life. Several years ago I wrote a play about (Invisible Boy) which had a profound impact on a lot of people. I received e-mails, hugs, and thanks from both friends and strangers for being honest with my story and for sharing it. I knew after that experience that I wanted to write a book about it that I hoped could reach and help even more people.
Callen Harty I observe the world around me a lot and process what I'm seeing, hearing, feeling, experiencing. Once my feelings about what I'm observing are clear to me I can get them into writing form. Sometimes I have to process an idea for a long time. Other times it can be an hour or two after an event and I've written a 1,200 word blog post.
Callen Harty I just published my second book, Empty Playground: A Survivor's Story. I have two other books I am already working on--a fiction book about coming out and a collection of essays. I have other ideas percolating as well.
Callen Harty For me it sometimes helps to let the project sit for a while and then go back to it with fresh eyes. In the meantime you can continue working on something else. Usually writer's block is about a particular piece you're working on (or a part of that piece that is difficult) rather than a generalized feeling where you can't write anything, at least for me. So, setting the piece with the issue and coming back to it usually helps.
