I'm so glad you asked this, Fred. 2014 is my first year as an official, money-earning author. The 4 books I've put out this year have already been nominated for several awards, and I don't expect my good fortune to stop there. I make good money too, for just starting out.
But you know what? None of that matters.
It matters that my writing makes ME happy. And I try very hard to send a message with each book that will speak to readers.
I will measure my success by the effect my books have on other people's souls.
With each book I finish, I feel successful. Fulfilled. That is how I measure my success.

The difference between a writer and a schizophrenic is the writer listens to the voices... and writes down what they're saying. I see images in my head and listen to the voices, like watching a movie at the theater, and then I jot down their words and actions. Eventually you get a story.

If I can do it, you can do it. Don't give up. Don't lose hope. Just keep writing. Repeat after me: Just keep writing. Just keep writing. Just keep writing, writing, writing. What do we do? We write, write, write! (Why, yes, I DO have Dory-brain!)

Sharing the story with other people. It's especially exciting when you meet someone who loves your characters as much as you do!

I sulk. Then I pray. Then I ask my husband. Then I pray some more. Then I listen for those still small voices I hear of my characters and start writing whatever they say. We get moving again.
