Take some classes, join a critique group to get feedback and learn your writing strengths and weaknesses, and get in the habit of finishing what you start. Surprisingly, not one of the half-finished stories and articles in my drawers ever magically got published.

I do things like going to readings and listening to authors I enjoy, doing a short exercise like describing something in the room in detail, or reading a chapter from a book that stirs my writing juices.

I get to bring characters and places to life, and have them populate a world and deal with issues that are important to me. It's not easy by any stretch, but it's worth the challenge.

Whenever I'm blocked, I vent about it in my writing journal and try to get at the deeper feelings beneath it. I usually find that either there's some issue with the story that I'm not feeling confident enough to fix; or I'm feeling blocked because of other problems that have nothing to do with the story. This self-therapy almost always helps me.
