Hello, Beth! Thank you for your question; apologies for not checking in sooner. I am no longer on Facebook (that whole Cambridge Analytica thing put me off). I am currently working on two books: another book based around Skellig and his circle and another non-genre book. I'm also working on a couple of TV pilots so even though it looks like nothing's happening on the outside, I promise you that I'm swimming as fast as I can.

It was a huge change for me. In scripts, there's no narrator and you can't hear characters think. Those small truths change the whole dynamic of story and dialogue. Plus, you have to pay attention to prose. Stories are stories but the way they are told has a huge affect on the end result. Plus, in book writing, the writer doesn't have a legion of brilliant people spackling over his or her weaknesses and elevating the material. It's just the writer and the reader.

Should I be ashamed of this answer? I was in the back of a car and put in my earbuds to signal to the driver that I didn't want to chat and he started a fascinating conversation of his own about helping to find a struggling veteran a job as a car mechanic.

Another book, a different book, two TV pilot scripts, and I'm heading out next week to try to persuade people to let me do another TV series.

Doesn't everyone answer this question in the same way? Writers must write and write and write and write. Maybe Gladwell is correct and after 10,000 hours of writing you start to get good at it.

Being able to read and tell people that you are working...

I worked in TV too long to have the luxury of writer's block -- but if I really REALLY don't feel like writing, I'll pick up a book and start reading. Books always make me want to write whether they are fiction or non-fiction.

That could change day by day. This morning I'd have said that I'd like to be aboard the Sophie with Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin in the brilliant Patrick O'Brian Napoleonic War series. But now that I've had my morning coffee, I think I'd like to spend a little time in Jaber Crow's barbershop in Wendell Berry's fictional town of Port William in Kentucky.
