Every novel immerses us in a fictional world, even realistic fiction. I'd love to spend time in the world of Robert Frost's North Of Boston; to vist the Metropolitan Museum of E.L. Konigsburg's From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler; to visit Middle Earth; the England of Richardson's Pamela and Clarissa; and to see Charlotte weaving her web.

Write. Don't worry about rewriting. Don't follow advice too closely. Trust your intuition. Put what you write away and then revisit it when it is fresh. If you're surprised with what you've written, then you're onto something.

Although it is often difficult, I love to write. I feel lousy when a day goes by without writing, even if what I write is no good and will be deleted the following day.

I'm not completely sure where DEAD IS BETTER came from. I have been thinking seriously and long about my own death. A dog found me and changed my life. Stuff like that.
