I've just begun reading 53rd Parallel. I have just finished reading INDIAN HORSE (Richard Wagamese, an Ojibway from NW Ontario). Check it out, if you haven't already. Wagamese writes simply & beautifully from a child's eyes: horrors of residential schools & tragic theft of their culture as well as the exhilaration of hockey- his love of his ancestors shines through the work. Indian Horse is not just a character.
Carl Nordgren Thanks Caitlin. I haven't come across Wagamese, and look forward to checking him out. You'll find I touch on the tragedy of residential schools in The 53rd Parallel, and visit that sadness again in later novels.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Carl Nordgren After about a 35 year writer's block--I knew I would write someday, I just couldn't maintain any practice--I finally sat down about eight years ago and stared writing and I haven't been able to stop.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Carl Nordgren The greatest reward I get is when my characters surprise me. It happens often.

What are you currently working on?
Carl Nordgren The 53rd Parallel is the first of a series of novels called The River of Lakes. I have finished the second--the working title is Worlds Between--and am about half way finished with the third.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Carl Nordgren I have wanted to write this book since the early 1970's when I realized the Ojibway I worked with were not going to receive justice for the great tragedy that befell them. I wasn't ready then. I am delighted that circumstances allowed me to write it now.
