H.D. Marychild For the one I'm working on now, it was a piece of music: Handel's coronation anthem "Zadok the Priest." The book has nothing to do with Handel, coronations, or priests, though. The music inspired an image in my head that then generated a plot to take care of it. For my first book, Skater Sister, the image that opens the next to last chapter just popped into my head when I was watching the Olympics one year. Everything in the book leads up to that image, though so far everyone's who's discussed the book with me has been completely surprised when they got to that point (which is good! That's what I intended).
H.D. Marychild Stories just pop into my head, unbidden. Sometimes there's a prompt--an image, a piece of music, something I read in the paper. But often ideas just show up, and I make them at home.
H.D. Marychild I have a new book drafted that is being revised. Very different from my last one--older narrator, takes place in the past. No sister this time! I don't want to say too much to give away the concept. Music is still important.
H.D. Marychild Write! And read. Those are the two best things you can do.
H.D. Marychild Creating something that you want to read yourself, and then learning that your writing made people laugh and cry.
H.D. Marychild I've never been affected by writer's block. I've had stories running through my head since I was eight years old!
