When I completed the first, "Sweetland of Liberty Bed & Breakfast," so many readers encouraged me to write a follow up. Besides that, I missed my characters and wanted to check in on them.
Readers felt that Samantha needed a romance, and I gave her one. It was fun to select her beau. I also thought since the stories are set in a bed and breakfast, a guest should have a plot line. That's where Joy came onto the scene.
And we can't forget Reggie the dog. I was halfway finished writing the book when we brought home our baby Boston Terrier. I spent so much time dealing with her that I wrote her in and she ended up playing a big role.

Writing in some way -- blogs, emails to friends, newspaper articles, my two novels -- is about the same as breathing to me. It's something I have to do in some form.

In my day job, I'm editing our newspaper's winter issue of Her magazine for women. I'm also preparing for a book signing that two writer friends asked me to take part in with them. And, I'll soon spruce up a program I'm giving at a large Indiana library on the topic, "So You Want to Publish a Book." It's something of an insider's guide to aspects of self-publishing a writer should consider before diving in.

Developing a story, and then letting the characters and their story line take on a life of their own and work out the plot. A huge surprise in all of this is how much I enjoy doing inspirational programs to encourage and affirm women in both living their dreams and blooming wherever they are (or want to be) planted. I also feel so honored when I'm invited by a book club for their wrap-up discussion of my book.

I give it some time and let my subconscious work on the block or place where I'm stuck in the story line. It's interesting how the mind will work out the plot or some outside influence will somehow inspire an answer.
