Two ways... first is to just give it time, do something else, take the pressure off. Second is to argue with myself. Nothing gets my creative juices flowing like a good, constructive debate. I know that's not for everyone, but usually taking sides helps focus a stance. I throw some stuff on paper. Then mindmap it to coherence. Then start writing.

Successfully conveying a thought to someone else. I love to see kids' eyes light up when they "get it" and start asking follow-on questions. Totally awesome!

The best advice I ever heard came from author John Maxwell. He was asked, "How do you write so many books?" His response: "One page at a time!"
Truth is... one WORD at a time. Just get started and see what happens. For novels, I recommend
1) The snowflake method - this will help you focus and provide structure
2) yWriter5 - some awesome software - and it's FREE!

Right now I'm working on "Prepper Pete's Be Prepared: A Be Ready Book for Kids" - this is my general preparedness, school friendly, "Chic-fil-a book" (because I think it would be GREAT for their kid's meals).
The goal is to help teach kids basic, everyday preparedness knowledge that they should know... from dialing 911 to what to do when the power goes out. As well, every kid should know PAGES (Phone number, Address, Guardian info, Email address, and Steps to take in an emergency).
But don't worry... there's plenty more where that came from!

I want to have FUN doing this. Sometimes ideas just slam into me like a freight train... sometimes I have to work through a few things. But my real inspiration for the Prepper Pete Series is answering the question, "What do I want MY kids to take away from this?" - the rest is just letting others listen in!

Survivalist Sam Stocks up was actually part of the original "book" of Prepper Pete Prepares. I had so much information when I first outlined it (in 45 minutes) that the initial book became three - 1) Prepper Pete Prepares; 2) Survivalist Sam Stocks Up; 3) Prepper Pete Gets Out of Dodge (coming soon!).
I've taken detours with Twelve Days of Prepper Christmas; Gun of a Son; and my next release - Prepper Pete's Be Prepared!
