The first is to use some sort of plot structure. The second is focusing on my MC's goals--external and internal. When I do this, the words flow. If I'm struggling it's because I've lost track of what my MC wants.

The idea for Butterfly Bones came from a song by The Cure called Caterpillar. It started off as a horror novel, but my MC kept resisting, and so I allowed her to lead me to what she wanted the story to be.
