Gregg Swain I think getting outside, going for a walk, often clears my head. Sitting in front of a computer can be counter-productive for me. I get my best ideas when I am not trying so hard!!
Gregg Swain I continue to look at Mah Jongg tiles, trying to understand the often cryptic images that appear. I love it when I have those "aha" moments, when I finally "get it" and know what the images represent. With the help of other Mah Jongg historians and Chinese language translators, we are able to put finally understand what the craftsmen intended to tell us, almost one hundred years ago.
Gregg Swain I thought a book should be written when I found a delicately carved Mah Jongg tile from the 1920s hiding under a red Joker sticker dating back to the 1960s. I went to the internet to find out more about that image, and the art on Mah Jongg tiles, and found out there was no information about the images and what they symbolized. And, sadly, there was no information about the craftsmen who created the images. All that information was lost or destroyed. A book was needed to celebrate this overlooked art form, and Ann and I were the ones to do it.
