Well, Vanessa was based on an old boss. Yeah, I've worked for some real winners. ;) I pull some characteristics from family and friends. And every character has a little of me, but amplified. The trait thesauruses by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi help me round out their experiences and develop a backstory for each.

I talk to one of my CPs and bounce ideas off them. That usually gets my ideas flowing.

Creating a cast of characters, weaving some intrigue and mystery into the mix, and writing a story filled with hot sex and romance.

I'm still a newbie myself. The advice I have gotten from the authors I admire is to write, write, write. Every day. My advice would be to use beta readers, as many as you can find, and to be open to their comments. Ignore comments that aren't constructive, but try to look within all the comments and find the help that beta reader was offering. Some advice you may use; others you may chose not to use. It's still your work, your vision.
