I had been a Neil Young fan for many years and I was encouraged by editor Scott Sandie to submit articles to "Broken Arrow," the quarterly magazine of the Neil Young Appreciation Society. I focused on articles about his earliest years in Canada. This led to a more in-depth article about his school days, "A Shakey Education," that was published in the magazine in 2010. It was well received, and it was at this point that I thought of expanding the material into a book-length work.
