Kenton Hall I'm currently working my way through Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series, re-reading some Dickens and looking forward to Margaret Atwood's The Testaments.
Kenton Hall The universe as depicted by Douglas Adams. I know where my towel is.
Kenton Hall He had never quite adjusted to living alone. The sudden creak outside his bedroom door, however, summoned a desperate prayer that he would continue to do so.
Kenton Hall Honestly, I either walk away or write something else. Even if it's a random paragraph, or notes on a separate idea. For me, it's about keeping the muscle flexed, even when the imagination isn't behaving itself.
Kenton Hall I think the one constant, whether I'm writing prose, or film or music is the effect - hopefully - it has on an audience.

I know how much of myself was born in cinemas and between pages and even the hypothetical idea of providing a similar experience for someone else is breathtaking.

You have to constantly remind yourself of that, of course, because it's easy to forget in the midst of all the frustration and poverty.
Kenton Hall Read. Voraciously. And not just the books to which you naturally gravitate. Everything. Soak up all the ways in which words can be combined and then invent a few more.
Kenton Hall I'm in the duelling projects stage of development. I've started initial work on the two novels that are fighting for headspace right now, but neither has officially declared itself the victor as yet.

And I have a new album in the works, the recording of which was briefly interrupted to record the audiobook version of Bisection, to which I shall be returning soon. I like having plates in the air. I'm a terrible juggler, but they look pretty for as long as they stay up.

Also, there are still many miles to go to get Bisection out to as many readers as possible. It'll take longer to promote than it did to write - that's the nature of the game, especially these days.
Kenton Hall I genuinely enjoy the process of writing - 90 percent of the time - so once I've started, I can go for days.

Getting started, however, often proves challenging. I'm pre-writing in my head almost constantly, but I'm the laziest workaholic in the world. If I do get a chance to sit down for five minutes, a large part of me would prefer to read than write. Or stare into space, frankly.

I like deadlines. I find them incredibly motivating. I never feel short of ideas, but shaping them requires discipline and, for me, a looming date on the calendar makes a fine drill sergeant.
Kenton Hall Writing about my experiences with bipolar disorder was, for whatever reason, always something separate from what I thought of as my "body of work" - which is a pretentious way of describing what I've managed to release into the wild.

But I did write online about it, especially following a recent breakdown, by way of catharsis - short pieces about parenting with mental illness and the absurdities that seem to follow in the wake of both.

A lovely publisher approached me, having read a few, and suggested that I collect them into a volume, but I wanted to attempt something more substantial. They agreed and I flew into my traditional, panicked keyboard flurry.
