I'm currently reading Terry Pratchett's Dodger, a period piece set in the early gaslight days of London. I don't really have a long list, I just start grabbing pieces as I see them.

Many times, when I'm either having writer's block or just trying to work something out in a plot, I take a drive. A long drive on boring roads (if possible) gives the majority of your mind a chance to crunch through a plot until you have to turn around and go back to your laptop.

I don't think there is a best thing about being a writer. The really successful writers have loads of money, work their own schedules, and live wherever they want because they have no commuting to do and work from home. However, the rest of us usually have a day-job and must live within commute distance. The real issue is whether you are driven to write or not. For most of us, we have to write whether it makes us rich and famous or not. Writing is a lonely activity and not for everyone, but all the cons will not stop a writer from writing.

My most recent book is The Hunters: Monster Hunting 101 and I got the idea from an early episode of Supernatural. I never liked Sam killing a woman who had been bitten by a werewolf and thought the writers could have handled it differently. Since they didn't, I did.

Stop everything else and read something that made me want to write in the first place. Many times, the urge will overtake you again.

Read everything you can and join a writer's group, either on-line or, better yet, a local group. Don't push your own material until you've seen what the others write. Once you are sure you are dealing with writers with a passion for the kind of material you like, join in and accept their constructive criticism with good humor and a smile.

I'm currently working on sequels to The Wanderers series and The Hunters series; between working on those I am also well into a near-future SF thriller.
