Kit Walker I read a lot of news and nonfiction. Tech news is especially useful for science fiction--it's easier to see where we might go when you have a comprehensive understanding of where we are. For the Jay Moriarty stories, Ed Zitron's newsletter is a godsend--not least because it makes me angry. You need to be angry to effectively write about ruining rich people's lives.
Kit Walker In the original Sherlock Holmes canon, Sebastian Moran (second-in-command to Professor Moriarty) is said to have once "crawled down a drain after a wounded man-eating tiger." When I decided to do a modern-day adaptation of Moriarty and Moran, I didn't want that event to be buried in Moran's backstory--I wanted to see him do the utterly insane thing.

I then watched a documentary called "Britain's Tiger Kings," about exotic animal ownership in the UK, and the idea of a live tiger as the fiddle in a classic fiddle game con began to take shape. The result was "Sebastian Moran Gets Mauled by a Tiger," which is out on November 14.
