I lived near Pilot Point for about 12 years. During that time, I wrestled with aloneness and some trying droughts as well. And I came to appreciate that area of North Texas. The novel is not autobiographical. But there is a lot of my experience in it.
And I've long been inspired by the beautiful but often stark landscape of Texas. There is a lot of that in the novel as well.
