Dawn Brotherton Don't take things too personally. It hurts when your book gets less-than-positive reviews. But you can't please everyone. Not every book is meant for everyone. Take the opinions you are given and try to learn something from them. Leave the rest behind.
Dawn Brotherton Setting my own schedule. I have two teenage girls. I love to be involved in their sports, art, and school. Writing gives me that flexibility. The HARD part is not pushing myself to work constantly. There is so much more to writing than actually writing. The marketing, publicity, setting up appearances, working with cover artists, etc is very time consuming. I have to MAKE myself leave my computer when the girls get home, so I can spend time doing things that aren't work-related.
Dawn Brotherton Writer's block isn't much of a problem with me. I have so many ideas I don't have the time to get them all on paper. I do get really motivated when I'm listening to books on CD in the car. More ideas flood my brain and it's all I can do to NOT pull over and start writing.
Dawn Brotherton I used up my best mystery plot in "The Obsession." I had a stalker when I was a young lieutenant stationed in Missouri. I used that experience to kick start my writing career.
Dawn Brotherton I have a few things in the making. One is Jackie's third story that will deal with Sexual Assault in the military. My two daughters (12 and 14) are fantastic writers and they keep feeding me ideas. I want to try a junior fiction about a fastpitch softball team of young girls. It's hard to adjust writing styles between adult novels and junior fiction. My daughters are helping me proof read though so I get it right.
Dawn Brotherton I first I didn't think I'd have any other ideas after "It's the Right Thing to Do," which is based partially on a true story. But with the positive response, now I have so many ideas and not enough time to write them all. I'm still in the Air Force so that, and my family, take up most of my time.
Dawn Brotherton I wrote "It's the Right Thing to Do" based off some true stories that happened to me when I was a missile launch officer. When I would tell the stories to my friends, they encouraged me to write them down. I did, and added the murder part (thankfully that wasn't true). After the first book took off, my readers wanted to hear more about Jackie, so I wrote "Wind the Clock." Jackie is done with her missile time but is progressing in the Air Force. Her fighter pilot husband plays a prominent role in the second book.
