I don't think I can answer that question. You have to be driven to tell a story and share it with others. Writing for yourself can be therapy but if you're not intending to share with others, to entertain or educate then what's the point of writing?

I'm writing a paranormal novel that's not erotic in nature but involves gay characters. it's a genre I've not explored previously in writing although I read this type of work frequently.

Write, write, write. Join a critique group, preferably one that meets close to you and that meets your genre needs. I write m/m romance, GLBTQ fiction so it's hard to find a writer's group that meets in person but I have writer friends who can read and critique the non-erotic elements of my work in progress. That process makes me and, I suspect others, better writers.

Sharing a story that only existed in your mind. Seeing the story shape into words for others to see. You've given birth to these characters and sometimes as you're writing their stories, they evolve into something you haven't expected.

There's a reason for writer's block. And unless I have a deadline to worry about, I don't worry about it. Sometimes talking to friends about an issue, or a character gets me out of the trench I'm in while I'm writing.
