I have heard some authors and painters say inspiration is for wimps. Of course, what's true for some authors is not true for others, but if I'm feeling inspired things seem to zip along. If not, I do not sit for four hours waiting for something to come to me.
One of things I will do if I am stuck is to think what would your characters do in this situation? Or what kind of situation would your characters even get into? This is more or less Stephen King's advice and I find it EXTREMELY helpful.
One other thing I do, I learned in a creative writing class, was to pick up a paper and a pen and just start the mechanical activity of writing. It's surprising that it works from time to time.
If all else fails, I do my day job.
