If I am blocked in a story, it because there is something wrong in the story. My subconscious says stop and finds a 100 other things to do instead. I have to recognize I am avoiding it (which is not always easy) and then talk out why. Talking out or 'what if-ing' generally helps.

I get to find out what happens in whatever mash-up my head comes up with.

Keep writing. I'd say get feedback, but I mean get feedback that is right for what you are trying to write. Don't get horror writing feedback if you are writing kids' books. What you are expected to produce is vastly different.

You become what you do and habits are your default. I tried to create the writing habit so that when that idea is fresh and hot, I can get it down.

I am finishing the last book in the Relic Series.

For the Relic Series, I had this image from a dream where there was this alien machine in the middle of the jungle. There was a team of people there who were trying to get Relics.
After they pressed the buttons on the machine, lights and electricity coalesced on a platform and the whole structure shook. But they stayed inside because they were desperate for one of these Relics.
What pops on to the platform? An '80's aerobic instructor who had been pulled forward in time. She was even wearing leg warmers.
I thought wow, I have to figure out what happened!
It took a trilogy.
