Timed writing prompts really help. I have no idea why, but when I hear the click of the timer, I stay focused and keep the pen to the page. Writing prompts help me explore ideas I wouldn't otherwise. Sometimes the result fits into my work in progress, or triggers an idea that's been mulling around.

The most important thing is to find out how you get words on the page. I found that when I need a trigger to get started, I write dialog. I'll put two characters in a conversation and before I know it, I've written a scene, which leads to a new plot point, or conflict/resolution.
I read every book on writing I could get my hands on, but reading about writing didn't get the words on the page. I had to try a lot of different things before I found what worked for me.
