The idea for Nothing Hidden Ever Stays was brought on by a story about a man from my hometown. He was a serial killer in the 1950’s, and suffered from schizophrenia. The house where the murders took place is said to be haunted. Learning about this man prompted me to think about the legacy that follows the family members when something like this takes place. It also made me wonder if the house might really be haunted. I thought about the way that mental illness affected not only him, but his entire family, and ultimately, the whole town. I wondered what it might look like if an entire family suffered from various mental illnesses, and the impact that would have if left unchecked. Of course I wanted to throw in a good old family curse just to keep things interesting. These thoughts were the springboard for the book that ultimately became Nothing Hidden Ever Stays.
