Ivan Wainewright I'm a big fan of MindMapping - that can be helpful for plotting but also great for inspiration.

I also drive around the M25 - honestly! - it takes me away from my desk, phone, people, and I find I can think clearly about a particular aspect of my novel which I need to think through. It's worked many times for me!
Ivan Wainewright I was initially writing a more hedonistic story about the relationship between two young, multi-racial, twenty-somethings living in 1990s England, engrossed in food, music, sex, their careers. But I realised that I – and they - wanted to express my hatred of racism and homophobia, and the characters and their journey provided the ideal basis to develop the theme of social injustice.

I thought of the title many years prior to that when I was living in Singapore!
Ivan Wainewright I'm writing a second novel. It's about a man born in the 1950s in a Bedouin tent in the desert, but raised in America. He travels to Vietnam at the fall of Saigon, lives with a native tribe in New Guinea, falls in love in Bombay, and ends up in Africa - where *something happens*...
Ivan Wainewright 1) Write what you like to read.
2) Write at least a little bit every day. If it's part of your WIP, that's great, and it will soon add up; if not, it still gets you in the rhythm of writing.
3) Finish something! I can't tell you how many "Chapter ones" I wrote... Finish a book, even if it's not your best work - it gives you such good experience and a great feeling of achievement.
