Hi Laurie! So nice to hear from you! I guess it never came up in Spain! Also, Jim tends to tell everyone so I just assumed he had. My 2nd chapbook of poetry just came out in Oct 2017 from Backbone Press. I have a third out there, looking for a publisher. Oh, I have to tell you, that trip to Spain inspired a ghazal about Rilke: Rilke returns to Ronda--http://ghazalpage.com/63-fernandez (remember we parked in the Poeta Rilke parqueo?) and a short story (A Pleasing Shape, unpublished as of now) about a robot who is the caretaker of a villa (similar to the place we went for the conference dinner, but in my story it's outside Mijas! ) I also used the cathedral of Malaga in the story. I really milked the trip for all it was worth! I haven't figured out how to use the Mayan Monkey Mijas chocolate factory yet! I need to travel more--I just don't have the stamina for it, unfortunately! I hope you've continued traveling and are doing well!

Don't wait too long! I always wrote for myself but didn't begin writing for publication until my very late 40s. I think in some ways this was an advantage, because at this stage in my life, I really don't need to impress anyone, nor do I need to do it for money. I have an established "day job" and there is no pressure on me to write anything I don't want to write just to survive. But, on the other hand, if you put serious writing on the burner too long, you might never get around to it! I am lucky I got my second chance to enter the writing world and I'm enjoying it tremendously!

Recently, (well, since the election, actually!) I experienced a poetry writing block due to the depression I felt at the state of affairs in our country. What brought me out of it was trying something new: flash fiction for second language learners. I had never tried writing flash fiction stories before, much less using a limited vocabulary and simple sentences suitable to second language learners. So the challenge piqued my interest and got me writing again! Soon, I was also writing poetry as well.

Fun, freedom, and more fun! As a writer I can be anyone and discuss anything in the universe without impediment. The only limits are my own imagination and inclinations.

I am working on a poetry chapbook based on the life of Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron's daughter and famous mathematician and writer known for her work on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, an early proto-type of the modern computer.
