As a member of a Turkish-American Association, I was fascinated by the Turkish women's stories of marriage, often arranged marriages. Their stories had been softened by time and were told openly, often with wry humor. In private conversations, their Turkish-American daughters did not want a family maneuvered marriage. They wanted to be free to get to know young men, to fall in love, and to marry for love.

I don't know about getting inspired. Writing is what I do. When the characters begin to argue in my mind and become restless, I must write.

My advice is to first let the characters live in your mind until you know them well, until they talk to you. Then begin to think about their lives. Finally when the pressure is so strong that you can't resist it any longer, start writing scenes.

Being a writer brings a sense of both power and freedom that is fantastic. Characters appear in the writer's mind and the writer has the power to control their fate. The writer is free to choose what, when, and why things happen to each character and how they will respond.

Thank you so much for asking. I am working on three projects--two fiction and one non-fiction. The working title of the non-fiction is 'Creating Your Troubled Characters' Backstories'. My fiction writing is cross-cultural, and interwoven with the love stories are the threads of the problems and care of young refugees. At some time in our lives, most of us are refugees--people fleeing from problems, conflict, trauma, and personal losses while yearning to go home, to go back to what is familiar.

When writer's block hits me, I work around it. I research some aspect of the novel that is stuck. I write anything: New Year's resolutions, to-do lists, letters, or reviews. I read outside of my area of writing and let the energy of the writer move me.
