(view spoiler)[Good question, generally it's somebody mentioning an unusual name or people watching. I think most writers are people watchers or listeners. If I hear something unusual I make a quick note generally and try and remember.
Esther Crook's name came from my Uncle overhearing the town name "Crook" up in Durham. I liked it so much that an innocent name could be turned into a criminals name - I used it. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I’ve had the idea for “Crooked” since I’m about 19 and I wrote it up in my notes - a very “stingesque”!story. But I never acted on it but did put an entire synopsis in my Facebook notes. Then two years ago I was on a cruise around Norway - I’d developed my character of Ash already but her mentor I couldn’t get- sitting watching a poker match with my family. A young woman approached and sat in on the game the first three hands she lost the rest she won with great style and finesse. It was then I began to see what I wanted and in the end crooked was born (hide spoiler)]
