my advice is to go for it! you can't succeed unless you try and put yourself out there! :) Have people read over a book you think you want to publish, and don't be hard on yourself if people give you constructive criticism. When you think your book is ready, put it out there!

Sometimes I am inspired by a picture that I see, or a quote that I like, or a dream that I had. But sometimes it's something that literally just popped into my head and I have no idea how it got there!

Sometimes I leave it for a bit, write something else, like a short story, or read a book, watch movies, let the words flow back into my mind. If I'm writing on a schedule, I sit at the computer and write anything until good stuff starts coming out. Then I just delete or rewrite what I didn't like.

Write all the time. Read all the time. Don't give up. And don't just write for the readers, also write for you.
