S McRae The idea for my most recent book actually stemmed from a project that my youngest daughter was assigned for her English class. She had this idea of a world where all of the fairy tale characters lived and it was guarded by a dragon. As we were working on it together, I told her I thought it would make a great book, and she agreed and asked me if I could write it. I got to work on the plot and characters, and now it's a two book series called The Written World.
S McRae I am currently working on a young adult fantasy romance called Rewritten, and it is the sequel to Unwritten in The Written World series. I also have a YA adventure romance trilogy that I switch off to at times, a YA fantasy romance standalone, and a YA romance standalone, all of them started, but most on the back burner for now.
S McRae My advice to anyone who feels the call of becoming a writer is to read. Read all sorts of things, especially the classics, as this is how you will grow your vocabulary and learn how to structure the flow of your writing. I think every great writer started off as a great reader.
S McRae I think the best thing about being a writer is having the opportunity to get all of the thoughts and ideas out of your head and onto paper in an organized fashion that others can connect with. Whether it's a work of fiction or an insightful help article, it's great to contribute something to the world of writing!
S McRae Writer's block is a very tricky thing, and it usually becomes an issue when there are a lot of other things on your mind. Sometimes though it can also be due to a temporary loss of interest in whatever story your writing. Either way, I have found that stepping away from the project for a while really helps. It gives you time to deal with whatever is bogging down the brain, and you can come back to your writing with a fresh perspective.
S McRae I recently received a package in the mail from my daughter in Colorado - when I opened it, it had a few gifts for me and a few for my husband, and then there was a random can of soup. At first I thought that maybe she had wanted me to try it, but she doesn't eat canned anything! I asked her about it and she had no idea how it got into the package and assured me that she had never made such a purchase. We began to speculate that it could be anything from drugs or money to stolen jewels masquerading as a soup can - it did feel a bit heavier than my other soup cans. But, I also considered the possibility of it being something dangerous, like a bomb or poisonous substance. Of course, it could also be soup - haha! We have yet to open it and it remains a mystery!
