Andrew Maraniss I started doing research for the book in 2006, before I was married or had kids. Over the course of researching and writing the book, I got married, moved, had two kids and took on much more responsibility at my real job. So finding time to write was always the biggest challenge: during the kids' naps on weekends, late at night after they'd gone to sleep, during mini-breaks on weekends when everyone else was out of the house for some reason. It wasn't so much a matter of inspiration, but just taking advantage of every potential moment to spend on the book.
Andrew Maraniss Eating appetizers in my mother in law's kitchen! Actually, I had first written about Perry Wallace when I was a sophomore at Vanderbilt in 1989. I interviewed him for a paper in my black history class, and later talked to him for a couple of student newspaper columns. But it was 17 years later when I was at my in-laws' house, standing in their kitchen, when my father-in-law suggested I write the book, knowing that I had a huge interest in Perry and was looking for a topic for my first book.
