My book 'The Secret Rose' is based on the life of my maternal grandmother. She came to Dublin in the 1940's and worked at a hotel on Ormond quay. She became pregnant outside marriage which was frowned upon by the state and church at that time. The story recounts the great lengths she was forced to go through to protect her daughter from the powerful state and religious institutions in Ireland.
