Diane Gallagher Liza and Annie from Annie on my mind. This is such a beautiful love story - sweet, innocent then tragic. Nancy Garden nailed what it is like to be a queer youth. It was a brave choice of topic for 1982, but an important one. These two girls find the sweetness of a blossoming love, the frustration and shame of a love that is forbidden, and the anxiety and anguish when they are forced apart. When I was working as a teacher librarian, I used to recommend this book frequently when I was asked for a love story.
Diane Gallagher I always have ideas floating around in my head. The bad ideas disappear of their own accord, but the good ones keep poking me, saying "Over here! Pay attention to me!"
Diane Gallagher Believe in yourself. When I was a kid, I always wanted to write something and get it published but I never believed I could actually finish a novel. Then, the older I got, the more I thought "I'm too old to write seriously." When I was about 47, I heard author Sylvia Olsen talk about publishing her first novel at 50. I thought to myself, I can do this. So that September, I entered the 3 Day Novel Contest. I wrote Greenwich List in 2 1/2 days and spent the last 1/2 day editing. I didn't win anything but I did send it to a couple of publishers and the second one, Asteroid, picked it up. That never would have happened if I didn't hear something in Sylvia Olsen's talk that made me believe in myself.
Diane Gallagher Wow. So many things. Setting my own work schedule. Creating something I feel proud about. Networking with other writers. And there is little that feels better than holding something in your hand that you created.
Diane Gallagher I've been lucky and rarely suffer from writer's block. When I do struggle, I write whatever even if it is crap until I break through.
Diane Gallagher I'm working on a collection of flash fiction, a paranormal horror and I am collaborating on a collection of haiku with my husband.
Diane Gallagher My most recent book, which is not yet published, is called The Bastard of Saint Genevra. I got the idea for this novel when I was driving through Sicily with my husband and my daughter in 2010. As I was listening to our GPS give us directions, it occurred to me what would happen if a saint were talking to someone through their GPS. This led to the story of Genevra, Elena and Cristiana.
