I started writing it in 2005 or 2006 (I can't remember). The inspiration was all the political noise created by the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth movement against John Kerry during the 2004 presidential election campaign.
Writers tend to always ask "what if" for their stories, so I started developing a story about the limits people will go to in order to get the election results they want.
