Philip Brian Hall I finished work on the second Toby Le Tocq mystery. It's called 'The Family Demon' and I submitted it to a publisher who unfortunately took about 18 months to say no. Rather than repeat that exercise, I'm preparing it for independent publication.

Fairly obviously the idea came from the first book, 'The Prophets of Baal', which left a certain amount of unfinished business. Many of the same characters make appearances, but the story is entirely new.
Philip Brian Hall Quite often when I'm reading, a part of my brain sets up a little flag in part of the text and says 'That would make a good story.' Sometimes it's simply a publisher's brief: 'We want stories about such and such by a certain deadline.' That forces the brain into gear and sometimes even if what you write doesn't fit exactly with what the commissioning publisher's looking for you'll find another who will like it.
Philip Brian Hall Strangely enough I think it's meeting new people. Of course the people are creatures of my imagination, but for me they become so real it feels as though I'm writing the history of their experiences.
Philip Brian Hall I find when I can't write prose I can write poetry. I find the discipline of rhyme and meter forces me to concentrate. Unfortunately formal poetry is not very commercial in these days of free verse. However it does help rekindle the creative spark.
