Scott Ralph The idea for the one I'm working on at the moment came from a bedtime story that I told my daughter. I was making it up as I went along and thought, "I could really expand this."
Scott Ralph My childhood, my daughter's life and the stories she tells me, little bits and pieces of ideas that come together to form complete plotlines and characters in my imagination. These all inspire me.
Scott Ralph My stuff is top secret until the beta readers get it, then it stays under wraps until rewrites are done. Then I let people know what's coming out right before it hits the shelves.
Scott Ralph Write every day. That's it. Don't worry about agents, don't worry about what your cover is going to look like, don't worry about writing any acceptance speeches for the literary awards you are winning in your mind. Just keep developing your craft. Finish the things you start. Reread and rewrite. Give to people you trust who will give you HONEST feedback. And write. When you're done writing, write some more. All the other stuff will come later. :)
Scott Ralph Having these characters come to life in my mind and exploring their worlds with them. Sometimes the world is a difficult and dangerous one to navigate, such the version of Greater Orlando that exists in Speed of Light, and sometimes it's built from memories of my childhood, like the Air Force base in Schmetterling. In unfamiliar territory I usually will let my characters take the lead!
Scott Ralph I'm usually working on two or three projects at a time, so if I get stuck, I'll go work on a different story for a few days. Sooner or later I'll get tired of that one, and I find that when I return to the original story that the problem has resolved itself.
