The satisfaction of knowing that a poem, essay, or story works! I like the editing after I've done a lot on the poem. Getting to the heart of my subject is very hard work. That's the worst part of being a writer. Getting started with a new poem or essay is also difficult.

Try to write at a set time every day. Don't edit as you go! Rather, just put any thoughts you have about a thing on paper. When you think you have it all down, keep going. That will help you get to the heart of what you will eventually write.

Just about everything inspires me, but if I have to pick one specific thing, it is definitely people. I love to observe people and then try to understand why they do what they do. I often write about things that happen in my own life and about things that happen to people around me. I feel that the personal has universal application.

My most recent book, "Worthy," is a true story. I met the woman and learned about her life and decided it needed to be written down. She had one bad thing after another happen, but somehow managed to come out the other end a stronger woman.
