Max Everhart To answer the question, here is an excerpt from an article I wrote for Southern Writer's Magazine:

Perseverance, in my opinion, is the most important quality a writer can possess. Perseverance is the ultimate trump card, and it’s far more important than talent or luck or even connections in the publishing world, although all of those are wonderful and certainly helpful. But perseverance is what is going to get a writer to sit down and write. Everyday. No matter what.

Perseverance, it ain’t sexy, but it’s powerful, especially if you are one of the chosen ones who have talent.

And here’s the best part: you’re not born with perseverance; it can be learned and developed. The only real question you should ever ask yourself is, “How hard am I willing to work to become a successful writer?”

Max Everhart I have a blue collar attitude toward writing, meaning, I punch a clock and write everyday. In the same exact place. At the same exact time. No matter what. The act of sitting down at my desk with my coffee is how I get inspired. Not all days are great regarding word count and quality of prose, but I always get something worthwhile.

And, of course, I read books I love, which is inspiring.
Max Everhart As a crime/mystery writer, I get to blackmail, kill, bribe, coerce, fistfight, kidnap, and threaten other people. . . without having to pay the consequences. I get to be a hero and a villain and a femme fatale. Yeah, it's as awesome as it sounds.
Max Everhart I just wrote a crime thriller called A SUNDAY IN ALPHABET LAND. It's about a crime-ridden neighborhood where a "problem-solver" named the Rook is trying to clean things up. He plays chess and carries a .45 Chief's Special to get justice…his way.
Max Everhart I'm pig-headed: I keep writing anyway. For me, it easier to work with something on the page than nothing. A baseball analogy: if you're slumping at the plate, you're not going to start hitting the ball by sitting on the bench. Get in the game, I say.
Max Everhart Pure wish fulfillment, Howard. Aside from being an author, my top two dream jobs would be private detective and baseball player. I grew up playing baseball--I could turn a double play and hit a curveball before I could read, believe it or not. I also grew up reading Encyclopedia Brown books, which are still great fun. Like they always say, "Write what you know," so I did. Bottom line, it's the kind of book I myself would want to read.
