Bronxland actually started out as a memoir only to morph into this novel. Simply, growing up on the Bronx streets in the '60s seemed a terrific place and time to tell such a story, also giving me the opportunity to go back in time through memory to those tumultuous days.

Strange, but I hated writing (way back) in high school - academic writing wasn't my thing then. But I discovered journalism in college and explored the nonfiction world, going on to write two books among other work. Bronxland was truly a labor of love, and my first dive into fiction, a coming of age story inspired by my own kids.

I may take on a sequel to Bronxland. There also has been some interest in a screenplay based on the book - so I wouldn't mind at all contributing to that.

Simply, don't let anyone dampen your energy and aspirations. Writing a book does require long patience, so surround yourself with people who feel positive about you and your work (and it doesn't hurt at all joining a community of writers who can help you along the writing journey).

The age-old question. I typically just write even if it's only to put down words that will never see the light of day. Sometimes this gets me through the "block." If not, I back out and return refreshed. I do think it's important not to settle into the block, but write your way out.
