Paul G. Diamond Some years ago, the company I worked for issued me with a Blackberry and suddenly I could be reached anywhere (and any-when) by email or phone. Around this time, people became inseparable from their 'Crackberry' devices. A colleague of mine even used to sleep with his rested on his chest. That way the vibrate notification would wake him the moment a message arrived.
Jumping forward a few years, more recently I watched a random guy walking along the street, looking at the screen of his smartphone instead of looking up and watching where he was going. It was a long road and he didn't take his eyes of the screen all the way. Nothing unusual there you might think, but I thought to myself how his actions would have been judged as very strange behaviour only a few years ago.
For a while now, little stories & events like these made me think about our reliance and, in some cases, our growing dependence on technology. This set me wondering, what if it all the devices disappeared or suddenly stopped working? What would people do? How would we all adjust? In what ways would our lives be forced to change, especially if the technology didn't come back?
This is essentially the idea behind 'Journey Time' but instead of smartphones and the internet, the technology that disappears overnight is a worldwide teleportation network. The story in the book is set just 90 years into our future, and it follows a small group of people in a local self-help group, part of a global network of people helping people as they adjust to their new lives and move on. Just as we would all eventually have to move on if the internet disappeared.
