Beth Brown Inspiration comes from many areas. Primarily I take an idea that I can't seem to get out of my head and turn it into a story. Ideas come from other books I've read (usually nonfiction), trips I've taken with my family, or just general day to day current events. I also read a lot and write in other formats, including occasional blog posts and lengthy emails to friends. As far as getting inspired to write, well, I don't need to talk myself into doing something I love, the inspiration is just there.
Beth Brown I am currently working on two novels. One is in the form of novelettes that act as installments for the completed novel. I hope to have the first novelette, The Jadeite Cat, out by the end of the summer. The second novel I'm working on is 1 in 10,000, a survival story. I have been working on it off and on for several years and I hope to be able to do the final research for the book this fall.
Beth Brown My best advice for aspiring writers is don't give up! Work at your writing everyday and don't lose faith in yourself. It's a long road from the story in your mind to the completed story on paper (or ebook), but if you stick with it, you'll get there. And only you can determine the path your story will take, so having faith in yourself is important.
Beth Brown I love writing. The best thing about writing is to have a creative outlet for all the thoughts and stories in my mind. I love the challenge of putting together a sentence. And the joy of feeling a story come together on paper. I find writing to be one of the hardest things I've ever done and I love every minute of it!
Beth Brown Writer's block is a tough thing to deal with. What I found to be helpful is to write. Yes, I know, that sounds like a contradiction. But when you feel that frustrating feeling of writer's block, the best way to get past it is to write. Write anything. Just start typing. Copy text from a book sitting near by. Type up everything you've done today. Just ramble. If you give in to writer's block it will control you. The best way to relax a writer's mind is to write. Just like a concert pianist who warms up by playing the scales, the same scales she or he has played a thousand times before, warming up for a writer means to write--write basic things to get the brain moving toward the creative.
Beth Brown I also have an online bookstore specializing in used, classic, and rare books. In the process of acquiring books for Belleyre Books, I came across The Natural Philosophy of Time. Reading through that very technical book, the idea of parallel time lines and a young girl seeking her parents just popped into my head. It's an idea that has fascinated me for a long time -- the idea of parallel time lines and the idea of different lives on different time lines. It's exciting to me to think about different paths in a life and how we may be able to choose our path.
