As the advice goes it doesn't have to be good it just has to be written.

Once you have a first draft you can start to mold it into something better often with the help of others.

Nicholas North started with an idea for the main character; who he is, what he is capable of, what he looks like etc and then developed from there. The story is still evolving and new characters are popping up but the main protagonists are now set in stone.
Philip Tolhurst A book tentatively titled Nicholas North: Schoolboy Detective. It was supposed to be an MG/YA adventure but it's turning into more of a horror with Lovecraftian monsters appearing, dark magic and hints of insanity.
