Thomas Timmins My most recent book is Aphrodisiac for an Angel. It sprouted from a happy, wild childhood memory. When I was a youngster, one of my favorite places to go was the old-fashioned Fun House in Arnolds Park, Iowa. After entering a low door behind a painted wooden clown who plunked at a piano and laughed at us with an echoey menace, we skipped past the nozzle that gushed a stream of air especially under girls' skirts (if they were naive enough to wear them), then we climbed a hundred stairs to the top of a 150' long polished oak slide and slid down, sitting on ragged throw rugs into the maws of a dragon or a giant with teeth the size of a grain shovel, or a snarling tiger or a brutal bear, then we leapt up and fell into a spinning Sugar Bowl with a dozen other boys battling to be King of the Mountain, careened up and down the sides through an 8' high, 40' long rotating Barrel. If we survived without broken bones - I knew kids who broke fingers, collar bones, and cracked their skulls - we joked around in front of the curvey mirrors and ran to the slide to start our tours up and down and around and through the FUN HOUSE. It was first built sometime in the 1920's or 1030's because we our parents and grandparents told us their Fun House stories.
By the time I finished the third or fourth draft of Aphrodisiac for an Angel, the Fun House some of the characters who snuck into the Fun House one night for a romantic adventure had disappeared from the novel or evolved into different people in the final book.
Thomas Timmins Write. I heard Ray Bradbury say if you write about 2 million words, you're ready to write. That's one approach.
Thomas Timmins Writer's block - as far as I know, I've never had it. When I can't move ahead with a project, I usually take time off from it. I let other kinds of writing emerge, especially short poems like haiku or couplets. Thanks for asking.
